The previous night, his film The Golden Bowl (Sunday Sky Movies Premier 4) had been shown at the Cannes film festival. Now Nick Nolte, en route from Cannes to Italy, had turned up for an interview lugging a huge leather travelling bag. From this he proceeded to extract a large amount of crumpled clothing, not all of it I suspected recently laundered, grunting distractedly the while.

"What are you looking for?" I asked. "My Viagra, " he said. "Can't travel without it."

I didn't like to ask what made the Viagra so important.
